Frisco, CO

Over the weekend I spent a couple days with friends in Frisco, Colorado. It was a great time of relaxation, walking and winter mountain hiking. Frisco is a high mountain town (elevation 9,075 feet) that sits next to beautiful Lake Dillon, and is surrounded by several major ski resorts.

Heading up the trail to hike Mt. Royal. We would take a wrong turn and end up making our own trail for the last portion of the hike. The snow was deep, feet and hands were numb, but it was thrilling. The snow was knee deep at the highest part of the hike.

Looking back over Frisco from the first section of trail.

The closest we got to an actual summit. This was a bit over 10,000 feet of elevation.

One of the many fourteeners that loomed in the distance.

Looking up from the stopping point on our mostly self-made trail. Any further and we would have broken through the tree line, and we weren’t prepared to do that.

Almost back down. The route down was a fun combination of walking, running and sliding on the steeper parts. At one point I slid backwards for a few seconds down a steep incline, corrected myself and then promptly slammed into the powdery snow.

Another view over Frisco.

Hiking on a trail from Copper Mountain to Frisco.

Free Wassail (hot mulled cider) was served up at most local businesses. We made several stops. So nice on a cold day.

It was a great couple of days with friends. I’m hoping to return to Frisco and the surrounding area again in a couple of weeks.
