The Final Day Of Walking

[Note: I wrote an article for the Huffington Post about my trip, read it here.]

This past Saturday, October 15, I finished my walk across America. I’ve tried to write a lot about the day and what it was like, but can’t really put anything together that I like. I’ll keep trying, but wanted to share at least something today.

I’ll just say this: It was the best day of my life so far and I couldn’t have imagined it going any better.

The only minor hiccup during the day was that technically I could not walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Ok, maybe a big hiccup, but my friend Sarah came to the rescue. The pedestrian path was closed, but Sarah got Joel, Bekka and I permission to walk on the bicycle path. Sarah then walked up to us from the south end of the bridge and met us. It was fantastic.

We then walked on some great trails that hugged the coastline and through some beautiful San Francisco neighborhoods. We came down over the last hill and the beach was there. It actually took my breath away. It was a feeling that I’ll probably never be able to describe. My mom and a few other good friends were waiting there.

I’ll just leave it at that and let you check out the photos and video of me walking (sloooooowly) into the ocean below.

On the bridge, it was windy

Breaking rules

Not sure what was so funny here.

Gotta love the tan line.

Left them right there on the beach.

Left Wilson on the beach. I hope somebody will put him to good use.

Approaching Ocean Beach

So that’s it. Such an awesome day.

I’m beginning to work on a book. If you are interested in reading parts of it as I write and staying updated on the progress, go to this page and put in your email address. You can also subscribe to this blog. I’ll be doing a lot of writing here from now on.

Thanks to those of you who were there the last day, and also to any of you who helped me out along the way and gave me so much encouragement. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Since I’m back in my home state of Maine, I thought I’d post a couple of photos of this wonderful place. Took these yesterday. It was overcast, but you can still get an idea of how beautiful it is.
